The Federal Communications Commission is ready to introduce the new step for the Universal Service Fund which is meant to subsidize phone lines “in rural areas and for low-income families.” The new step is to bring broadband access to homes with subsidizes which would be another move in advancing the country’s way of communication. According to an article from the Wall Street Journal the Universal Service Fund had $7.9 billion in distributions in 2010.
The FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said, "We are working at the FCC to modernize our Universal Service Fund from supporting yesterday's telephone service to tomorrow's broadband access service." With bipartisan support in Congress for the FCC fun change, there has only been disagreement over the methods of implementing a change.
What will come of this shall be seen soon; there is a meeting to discuss this topic on Tuesday February 8th. When something is finalized there will be a significant change to the culture of broadband access. Not only are companies pushing for this to be accessible by everyone but the government has now made the initiative to make this possible in a different, government enforced effort.'
For the telecom world this means a new today and a new tomorrow. As Americans with broadband connection catch up to those with it, we can only assume that the next great service will be coming around the corner.
Americans lives will change over the next couple months when a decision is made. Stay tuned to the telecom industry as governments, like the US government, advance the world wide connection.
